18th Century French Wooden Carved Decorative Panel A Bacchanalian Scene of Plenty - French Carved Panel from the 1700s - AQ2/43

A gorgeous single wooden walnut panel, found in the medieval City of Richelieu when the wonderful buildings in centre were being renovated. It depicts a typical bacchanalian scene of plenty, with a swagged urn full of ripe figs and nuts, surrounded by flowers a pedestal supported by two fat fish. A show of wealth in a house where probably, nobody had ever known hunger.

The panel, which is solid walnut and unframed, is 28.5" or 72cm in height and 15.5" or 39.5cm wide. Taking the relief carving into account the full depth is about 2" to 2.5" or 5-6cm. The panel has a beautiful deep patina from the years of exposure to family life and polish. Very deeply carved, this is a striking piece that would be a stunning focal point for a room. An interior designer's dream, a piece of sculpture or art that will transform its surroundings. The weight without any packaging is over 2.3 kg.

Traces of old worm can be seen but these are long gone and the wood is intact and sound. The top of the panel is gently curved, forming a lovely shallow arch.  This is a lovely one-off piece that would add a unique aspect to a renovation or up-styling project; to include in an integral focal point or use alone as an incredible decor accessory.

The City of Richelieu was designed by the famous Cardinal Richelieu and was the first grid city in France. The sumptuous houses were allocated to his supporters and acolytes, the aristocratic wealthy  who were responsible for his rise to power. A beautiful city, with the Cardinal's Chateau in parkland adjoining - now gone, but the park remains. A superb place to visit with history coming from every direction.
