Original Parisian Art - Antique Oil Painting - Notre Dame Les Quais Paris - Original Parisian Signed Oil - RAYMOND BESSE Art  - DC1

A delightful piece of Parisian Art - a study of Notre Dame looking up from the old working quays on the river Seine.

The painting came to us via a colleague who acquired an entire collection of Antiquities from the estate of a well-respected French antique dealer, an aquaintance of his. We will be listing other items from this collection as we catalogue them. The work of BESSE, like others of his contempories, are considered the fathers of the now famous modern Parisian En Plein Air impressionist street style. We have sold many paintings in this style but this work of BESSE is a first for us. What a find.

RAYMOND BESSE WAS born in 1899 in Niort in Western France and died in the town of  Candé-sur-Beuvron on the Loire river - close to our own old home town - in 1969. He arrived in Paris in 1916 and displayed his first work at the Salon des Independants in 1923; this piece comes from around that time.

Measuring 8.75" (22cm) high by 10.5" (26.5cm) wide and 1" (2.5cm) deep, the painting is of a Parisian working scene, showing the barges being unloaded at the side of the river Seine - where now tourist trip boats leave for river cruses. Painted in Oils on Board,  this is a very pretty and uplifting scene in in a muted palette giving it the feel of just another working day. The framed oil weighs 300 grammes without any packaging. The deep, stippled frame is typical of the time and the  finish works well with the artwork but does show some slight paint loss as we might expect with its age. Both the frame and the oil are in completely original condition. The signature is a genuine R Besse and has the addition of his second signature and description to the rear of the painting. His work is now becoming highly sought after and prices for his work are rising steadily.  A gorgeous gift as well as a good investment, for a lover of Paris and all things Parisienne.

The Société des Artistes Indépendants or Salon des Indépendants had been formed in Paris on 29 July 1884. The association began with the organisation of massive exhibitions in Paris, choosing the slogan "sans jury ni récompense". Albert Dubois-Pillet, Odilon Redon, Georges Seurat and Paul Signac were among its founders. The style of this painting is very much influenced by these great masters with the use of paint and the swirls in the sky very reminiscent of Van Gogh; the overall effect is of a good Impressionist work.
